Why Baby Teeth Matte

           Why Baby Teeth Matter

Parents have the question, “Why should I bother about baby teeth when they are just going to fall out?’” While baby teeth may be temporary, their role in your child’s health and development should not be ignored. At Grand River Pediatric Dentistry, we know that baby teeth are very important in your child’s health. Let’s now see why these little teeth are so important and how you can go about protecting them.

           Speech and Development

Your child will need healthy baby teeth to learn to talk correctly. They help in forming the words correctly and correct the pronunciation of the words. Your child may have speech development problems if they have poor oral health, which can negatively affect their speaking and interacting with others.

Also, the baby teeth play a key role in the development of your child’s jaw and face. They make sure that everything develops in harmony to provide perfect alignment of permanent teeth when the teeth come in.

           Chewing and Nutrition

Eating is one of the greatest pleasures of life and your child needs their baby teeth to chew and enjoy food. Healthy teeth help them break down fruits, vegetables and other nutritious foods, which are important for their growth and development.

When your child has painful or decayed baby teeth, they may refuse to eat some foods. It means that by protecting their teeth you are allowing them to enjoy a healthy diet.

           Room for Permanent Teeth

The primary teeth are temporary teeth, but they act as placeholders for the permanent teeth. They play a role in ensuring that the adult teeth come in the right position. This means that if a baby tooth is lost due to decay or an injury, the existing teeth may move to fill the gap.

This can cause crowding or misalignment of the teeth, which may require orthodontic treatment later, which is expensive and time-consuming. Thus, you are ensuring your child has a future with a straighter and healthier smile by caring for their baby teeth.

           Combating Dental Phobia

Routine dental visits are not just for cleaning; they are a way of establishing pleasant experiences for your child. If children have pleasant experiences at the dentist, they are less likely to be afraid of dentists as they grow older.

At Grand River Pediatric Dentistry, we are a team of dentists who love children and aim to provide them with a pleasant environment. We want every visit to be a good experience toward the child’s future oral health.

           Spring Cleaning for Teeth

Spring is a time of renewal, and it is not only for cleaning your house or changing your clothes – it is also the perfect time to pay attention to your child’s dental health! At Grand River Pediatric Dentistry, we know that it is crucial to adhere to good rules all year round, but spring is a good time to set a new trend. The following are some of the simple yet effective ways through which one can ensure that their child’s smile remains bright during this spring.

           Spring Cleaning for Teeth

As you do some spring cleaning at home, your child’s dental hygiene also needs some tidying up. First, replace their toothbrush if it has been more than three months or if the bristles are worn out. Getting your child a new toothbrush with his or her favorite cartoon character or a bright color will make them want to brush their teeth.

You should also consider checking their toothpaste. Make sure it has fluoride content and is suitable for the age of your child. Fluoride is necessary for the development of strong enamel and helps in the prevention of cavities, especially in the growing teeth.

           Healthy Spring Snacks

This spring, there are Easter baskets and sweet treats around, but it is crucial to remember that they should be accompanied by tooth-friendly snacks. Some of the fruits that are good for the teeth include apples and strawberries as they help in cleaning the teeth. Carrots and celery are also very crunchy and help in cleaning the teeth while being rich in nutrients.

It is advisable to reduce the intake of sticky candies and sweets as they stick on the teeth and increase the risk of getting cavities. If your child has a sweet, tell them to drink water and brush their teeth to reduce the effects on their teeth.

           Hydration and Oral Health

As cold weather decreases, the probability of your child needing hydration increases. Water is the best drink for your child’s mouth. It helps in cleaning the mouth, removes plaque, and maintains the moisture of the gums.

If your child is into spring sports or plays outside a lot, do not forget to give them a packed lunch with a filled-up water bottle to quench their thirst throughout the day. Avoid sugary sports drinks and sodas that can lead to tooth decay.

           Set Up a Spring Check-Up

Spring break is not just for resting, it is also a good time to catch up on dental visits! Preventive care visits and cleanings are very important to help avoid decay, find problems when they are small, and maintain your child’s oral health.

At Grand River Pediatric Dentistry, our team will do everything they can to make your child’s dental visit as enjoyable as possible. We will examine their teeth to make sure that they are clean and healthy and ready for the spring.

Making Dental Visits Fun: Tips to Help Your Child to Smile

Reducing your child’s anxiety and making the visit enjoyable for them if you prepare well for the visit. Here are some tips to help make going to the dentist an enjoyable experience.

           Choose a Kid Friendly Dentist:

Choosing a pediatric dentist who understands the needs of children can make a big difference. These dentists normally have colorful offices with toys and activities that will interest children and make them feel at home.

           Play the Role at Home:

At home, you can pretend to be going to the dentist. Make your child count his or her teeth with a toothbrush, and make the child do the same to a stuffed animal or doll. This way they will get used to the experience that awaits them during the visit.

           Plan a Fun Reward:

You could also plan to reward your child in some way after the visit, for example, take them to the park or buy them a small treat. This way, the child has something to wait for and the dentist will relate to the positive things in the child’s life.

           Stay Positive and Calm:

This is because your child’s perception of events is greatly influenced by your perception. Do not use any negative language when talking to your child about dental visits. If you remain calm and offer comfort, your child will also be calm.

           Bring Comfort Items:

You should also allow your child to take a favorite toy or blanket to the appointment. A familiar object gives a child comfort in an unfamiliar situation.

           Use Positive Reinforcement:

Tell your child how brave and cooperative they are during the visit. Using positive reinforcement, your child will be more likely to continue the behavior in the future and want to go back to the dentist.

With these steps in mind, you and your child can look forward to dental visits as fun and enjoyable experiences. It is important to build a good relationship with the dentist at an early age so that the child is comfortable with the dentist and will take good care of his or her teeth for a lifetime. Set your child’s next dental appointment and let them leave with a smile!

Debunking Fluoride Myths: Ensuring Safe Dental Care for Your Child

When it comes to your child’s teeth, think of fluoride as a shield, standing between the constant acid and bacterial attack, and your child’s precious teeth. Despite its widespread usage, there are still many myths about fluoride, which can cause undue concern for parents. This post will help you understand common fluoride myths and provide you with evidence-based information to help you make informed decisions about your child’s dental care.

           1. Myth: Fluoride in Drinking Water Is Harmful

Some people claim that fluoride in drinking water is bad for you. But contrary to popular opinion, water fluoridation is a safe and most effective way of preventing tooth decay, according to extensive research. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends a fluoride concentration of 0.7 mg/L in drinking water to get the best dental health benefits. Studies that show a potential harm of fluoride in drinking water are from countries where naturally occurring fluoride is at levels much higher (sometimes over 4 times as high) than what is even added to water here in the U.S.

           2. Myth: Fluoride Causes Cancer

The fear of fluoride causing cancer has been extensively examined. The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council found no evidence of a causal link between water fluoridation and cancer, making fluoride safe for dental care.

           3. Myth: Children Don't Need Fluoride Toothpaste

Some parents don’t use fluoride toothpaste for their kids because of safety concerns. But using fluoride toothpaste is an important step in preventing tooth decay. The CDC recommends that children brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for good oral health starting with eruption of the first tooth. A smear or rice-sized amount is all you need for children that are too young to spit the toothpaste out yet. This will give your child’s brand new teeth the benefits of fluoride without the risk of ingestion.

When it comes to fluoride, the facts are better than the fears. Knowing the difference between the two will help you make informed decisions that are best for your child’s dental health. Simple measures like fluoridated water and fluoride toothpaste serve as a shield for your little one’s teeth against cavities and decay.

As a parent, it is your responsibility to practice accurate, evidence-based measures that will help your child develop a healthy, happy smile. Remember, every brush, every sip, and every decision made with knowledge helps your child develop a strong, beautiful set of teeth for a lifetime. So, it’s time to ditch those myths and focus on what’s really important: your child’s future.

The Hidden Dangers of Ultra-Processed Foods on Your Child's Dental Health

The Hidden Dangers of Ultra-Processed Foods on Your Child's Dental Health

Your child’s favorite snacks might be damaging their smile in a surprising way, according to new studies on ultra-processed foods and children’s dental issues.

This is your child’s mouth as a construction site, with strong, healthy teeth as the buildings. Thus, eating such ultra-processed foods puts subpar material into the system, which can cause the structure to become weak and the building to potentially collapse. In this post, we will explore how these easy but non-ideal foods can affect your child’s dental health and what you can do to help protect your child’s smile.

Here is how these things can harm your child’s teeth and jaw:

           1. The Soft Food Trap: How Texture Affects Jaw Development

Ultra-processed foods are soft and don’t need much chewing. This low chewing can lead to underdeveloped jaw muscles and bones, which can cause teeth to come in improperly or even affect the shape of the face. A study at the Catholic University of Valencia found that most dental crowding and insufficient jaw development occur in children who regularly consume soft, ultra-processed foods.

Practical Tip: Offer your child a variety of whole foods that need chewing – fruits, vegetables, whole grains – to help develop the jaw right.

           2. Sugar Overload: The Sweet Road to Cavities

Many ultra-processed foods are high in hidden sugars, a major source of cavities. When sugar interacts with the bacteria in the mouth, it produces acid that eats away at the tooth enamel and brings about decay. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests limiting sugary snacks for healthy oral hygiene for kids.

Practical Tip: Instead of sugary snacks, give your child healthy options like cheese, nuts or sliced vegetables to cut down on sugar and help protect their teeth.

           3. Nutrient Deficiency: Weakening Teeth from Within

Ultra-processed foods are often lacking in nutrients, including calcium and phosphorus, which are crucial for healthy teeth. A lack of these nutrients can make the tooth enamel weak and more likely to decay. A balanced diet that includes vitamins and minerals is important for dental health.

Practical Tip: Make sure your child is eating dairy products, leafy greens and lean proteins to help them get the nutrients they need for healthy teeth.

           4. Hidden Acids: Eroding Enamel Silently

In addition to sugar, many ultra-processed foods contain acids that can wear away at the tooth enamel over time. This erosion can lead to sensitivity and the development of cavities. Avoiding acidic foods and maintaining good oral hygiene can help prevent this.

Practical Tip: Help your child to rinse his mouth with water after eating or drinking something acidic and to brush his teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.

           5. The Fluoride Factor: Missing Out on Natural Defenses

Fluoride is important for the enrichment of tooth enamel and the prevention of decay. However, a diet rich in ultra-processed foods may reduce exposure to fluoride from other sources, such as whole foods and tap water. The CDC recommends drinking tap water containing fluoride to help protect the teeth.

Practical Tip: Encourage your child to drink fluoridated tap water and use fluoride toothpaste to strengthen his teeth’ natural defenses.

Conclusion: Ultra processed foods may be convenient, but they are a slippery slope for your child’s dental health. By being mindful of your child’s diet and encouraging better habits, you can help your child keep that big smile for years to come. Little changes you make today can lead to big changes in health tomorrow.

Dental Care in the Time of the Pilgrims

When we envision the Pilgrims, our minds often drift to images of the Mayflower and the inaugural Thanksgiving feast. Yet have you ever paused to consider how they tended to their dental health? The dental care practices of the Pilgrim era were worlds apart from what we know today, providing a captivating insight into the hardships faced by early colonial settlers.

           Natural Remedies and Basic Tools

The Pilgrims lacked access to contemporary dental instruments or trained professionals. Instead, they turned to nature and rudimentary tools for their oral hygiene. They employed twigs or pieces of cloth for cleaning their teeth and utilized natural elements like salt and herbs such as sage to freshen their breath and combat inflammation.

           Understanding Dental Health

In the 17th century, knowledge about dental health was quite basic. The Pilgrims held beliefs that toothaches stemmed from worms or imbalances in bodily humors. This led them to pursue remedies aimed at restoring balance, including practices like bloodletting or applying herbal poultices.

           Toothache Treatments

Toothaches were a frequent concern, prompting various methods for pain relief among the Pilgrims. Clove oil was a favored remedy due to its numbing effects, while vinegar, garlic, and even heated coals were also employed in attempts to ease discomfort. In severe cases, tooth extraction was carried out with simple tools such as pliers or forceps.

           Diet and Dental Health

The dietary habits of the Pilgrims significantly influenced their oral health. Their meals consisted largely of carbohydrates and sugars that could lead to decay; however, without processed foods or refined sugars prevalent today, their teeth faced less risk than ours might in contemporary times.

           Legacy and Lessons Learned

While it’s easy to view the dental care methods of the Pilgrims as primitive by modern standards, they exemplify the tenacity and ingenuity of those early settlers. Their reliance on natural solutions—though limited—set a foundation for future advancements in dentistry.

To sum it up, considering the Pilgrims' methods of dental care—particularly for their children—highlights just how much progress we've made in grasping the importance of oral health. We are incredibly lucky to live in an era enriched with knowledge and advanced technology that empowers us not just to preserve, but also to revel in the joy of our healthy smiles!

Your Child's Dental Health During the Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time of celebration, joy, and delightful treats shared with loved ones. Yet, amidst all the excitement, it’s vital to keep your child’s oral health at the forefront. Good dental habits shouldn't take a backseat during this festive period; neglecting them can lead to serious consequences down the road. In this article, we present valuable strategies to help your children uphold excellent oral hygiene throughout the holidays.

           Maintain Consistency:

With late nights and holiday festivities, routines can easily be disrupted. However, it’s essential to stick to a reliable oral care regimen. Make sure that brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash are integral parts of their daily activities—no matter how busy things get! A consistent routine is key for keeping their gums and teeth healthy.

           Promote Balanced Treats:

While it's tempting to indulge in sweets during the holidays, moderation is key! Encourage your kids to enjoy treats but remind them it’s not the total amount of sugar but the frequency or constant snacking/eating sweets that contributes to to cavities and other dental issues. Suggest healthier alternatives like fruits or dark chocolate for a guilt-free treat!

           Pack Dental Necessities:

If you're traveling or simply out enjoying holiday activities, don’t forget to pack essential oral care items for your child! Include a travel toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash in their bag so they can maintain good hygiene even while away from home.

           Gift New Toothbrushes:

The holiday season offers a perfect opportunity for new beginnings, like replacing old toothbrushes! This is a great opportunity to get an electric toothbrush, a fun fluoridated toothpaste or a special character toothbrush. A new brush enhances cleaning effectiveness by removing plague and bacteria from their mouths.

           Be a Role Model:

Children often mimic what they see adults do; therefore, set an example by prioritizing your own dental care during this festive time! Brush together as a family and showcase proper brushing and flossing techniques—it transforms oral hygiene into an enjoyable family activity while instilling lasting habits in your little ones.

           Book That Dental Visit:

The holidays are also an excellent time for scheduling your child's dental check-up! Regular visits are critical for catching potential problems early on and ensuring preventive care is taken seriously. Plus, it serves as a gentle reminder for them to keep practicing good oral hygiene throughout this joyous season.

Amidst all the fun-filled celebrations of the holiday season, keeping your child's dental health on track is paramount! By implementing these strategies, you’ll help them preserve strong teeth and healthy gums throughout this festive period—and beyond! Remember that fostering good oral hygiene now lays the foundation for lifelong well-being—an investment that truly pays off over time.

Unraveling the Reasons Behind Teenagers Bad Breath

Having bad breath or halitosis is quite a problem that many people face—yes, even teenagers! It can bring about feelings of embarrassment and social nervousness during the teenage period of growth and development. Being aware of what triggers bad breath can really make a difference in tackling the problem head on.

Here are a few key reasons behind it.

           Lack of care

One of the reasons for bad breath is not maintaining good oral hygiene habits among young adults and teenagers. They may overlook the importance of brushing and floss due to laziness or forgetfulness which can result in the accumulation of food debris and harmful bacteria inside their mouths causing plaque to form and leading to a foul smell emanating from their mouths. It is essential to promote consistent tooth brushing routines including flossing and regular dental visits, as effective measures to avoid bad breath issues.

Teenagers who consume excessive sugary treats and beverages are prone to tooth decay that can result in bad breath as well. Ensuring a well-rounded diet and reducing the intake of sugary foods can assist in addressing this concern.

When your mouth feels dry it means that your body produces more saliva than usual. Saliva plays a role in neutralizing acids and removing food particles in your mouth. Teenagers who tend to breathe through their mouths, taking medications, or are feeling stressed out might face dry mouth issues that can result in bad breath.

During their years some adolescents might experiment with smoking or using tobacco items resulting in lasting bad breath. Tobacco dehydrates the mouth and leaves behind a stubborn smell that regular brushing struggles to get rid of easily.

Certain health problems like sinus infections, tonsillitis, and digestive troubles can lead to breath odor in teenagers. If a teen continues to have bad breath with proper dental care it might be a good idea to speak to their healthcare provider, to check for any potential underlying medical concerns.

Understanding the reasons behind bad breath in teenagers is crucial for addressing and managing this common issue effectively. With the teenage years being a time of growth and social development, tackling the causes of halitosis can significantly boost a teen's confidence and social interactions. By encouraging consistent oral hygiene practices, promoting a balanced diet, and addressing habits such as tobacco use, parents and guardians can help teens maintain fresh breath. Additionally, staying vigilant about potential health issues and ensuring regular dental visits can further prevent and manage bad breath. By taking these proactive steps, teenagers can enjoy a healthier mouth and a more confident smile.

As parents our children’s health is a main concern. That includes their hygiene too, especially for teens! It's crucial to know that cavities can start forming in kids at any age, like during toddlerhood so it’s important to grasp how their teeth develop and teach them dental habits from a young age onwards. It is vital to choose the right toothbrushes and toothpaste for them and be able to recognize any signs of decay to keep their health in check effectively.

Children usually begin teething at around six months old and typically have all 20 baby teeth by the age of three.

Taking care of teeth from an early stage is crucial to prevent cavities.

Kids generally start losing their baby teeth and growing adult teeth around the age of six.

Emphasizing good dental health from a young age is essential.

Developing dental care routines from a young age lays the groundwork for maintaining bright and healthy smiles throughout a lifetime. Making sure to brush and floss regularly can prevent cavities from forming.

Here are three key elements to developing dental care routines from a young age:

            Consistency

: Establish a regular brushing and flossing schedule, making it a part of your child's daily routine. This consistency helps reinforce the habit and ensures that oral hygiene becomes second nature.

            Education

: Teach your child about the importance of dental care and the impact it has on their overall health. Use age-appropriate explanations and fun activities to make learning about oral hygiene engaging and memorable.

            Positive Reinforcement

: Encourage and reward your child for maintaining good dental habits. Positive reinforcement, such as praise or small rewards, can motivate them to continue caring for their teeth and gums diligently.

By focusing on these key elements, you can effectively instill lifelong dental care habits in your child, promoting a future of healthy smiles and confidence.

Choosing the right toothbrush and toothpaste for your child is essential for establishing good oral hygiene habits early on. Here are some tips to guide you:

: Select a toothbrush with a small head and a handle that's easy for little hands to grip. This ensures they can reach all areas of their mouth comfortably.

: Opt for soft bristles to protect your child's delicate gums and enamel. Soft bristles are effective at cleaning without being harsh.

: Use a fluoride toothpaste to help prevent cavities and strengthen enamel. For children under three, use a smear or rice-sized amount. For those aged three to six, a pea-sized amount is recommended.

            Age-Appropriate Formulation

: Choose toothpaste specifically for children, as it often contains less fluoride and has flavors that appeal to kids.

            Flavor

: Select a flavor your child enjoys, such as bubblegum or fruit, to make brushing a positive experience.

            ADA Seal of Acceptance

: Look for toothpaste with the ADA seal, ensuring it meets safety and effective standards.

By making brushing fun and selecting the right products, you can help your child develop a lifelong habit of good dental hygiene. If you have any concerns or questions, consulting with your child's dentist can provide additional guidance tailored to their needs.

Going to the dentist regularly starting at an age can prevent issues. Promote good habits. Try to schedule the first appointment by age 1 and continue with checkups every six months thereafter.

            White Spots on Teeth

: Early signs of tooth decay may appear as white spots on the teeth, indicating the enamel is beginning to break down.

            Tooth Discoloration

: As decay progresses, you might notice brown or black spots on the teeth.

s: Frequent snacking on sugary items can increase the risk of tooth decay. It's better to have sweets occasionally rather than throughout the day.

Ensuring health goes beyond just looks. It involves important elements that affect emotional wellbeing and cognitive abilities, from childhood to adulthood. Visiting the dentist regularly is key in developing life skills and making impacts, on diet choices and social connections.

In the end it is crucial to have community systems in place to provide healthcare options, for all families. This will help foster an environment that supports the wellbeing of generations.

Unlocking Healthy Smiles: Holistic Dental Care for Kids

When it comes to pediatric oral health, adopting a holistic approach can make a significant difference in a child's overall well-being. A holistic approach goes beyond just treating dental issues; it emphasizes the importance of preventive care, education, and the connection between oral health and overall health.

           Understanding Holistic Oral Health

Holistic oral health care focuses on the whole child, taking into account physical, emotional, and social factors that contribute to dental health. This approach encourages collaboration between dentists, parents, and other healthcare providers to ensure a comprehensive plan for the child's health.

           Preventive Care is Key

Preventive care is at the heart of a holistic approach. Regular dental check-ups, proper brushing and flossing techniques, and a balanced diet are essential components. By instilling good oral hygiene habits early, we can prevent common dental issues like cavities and gum disease.

The Connection Between Oral Health and Overall Health

Oral health is closely linked to overall health. Poor oral hygiene can lead to infections that may affect other parts of the body. For instance, gum disease has been associated with heart disease and diabetes. By maintaining good oral health, we can reduce the risk of these systemic health issues.

           Education and Empowerment

Educating children and parents about the importance of oral health is crucial. A holistic approach involves empowering families with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions about their oral care. This includes understanding the impact of diet, lifestyle, and environment on oral health.

           Emotional and Social Factors

Children's dental experiences can impact their emotional and social development. A holistic approach considers these factors, aiming to create a positive and stress-free dental environment. This helps in building trust and reducing dental anxiety, ensuring that children feel comfortable and confident in their dental care journey.

           Conclusion

A holistic approach to pediatric oral health is vital for fostering a lifetime of healthy habits and well-being. By focusing on preventive care, education, and the connection between oral and overall health, we can ensure that children grow up with strong, healthy smiles and a positive attitude towards dental care.

Dental sealants are a fantastic way to help protect your child's teeth from cavities - and they may be covered by your insurance plan! Here's everything you need to know about this preventative procedure.

Dental sealants are thin, clear or white coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of your child's back teeth. They act as a barrier, preventing plaque and bacteria from sticking in the pits and grooves of these teeth.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), sealants may prevent up to 80% of cavities for two years and 50% of cavities for up to four years after they are applied.

Dental sealants may last for up to ten years, provided that your child takes good care of their teeth. We will examine the sealants every six months to see if they need to be replaced or repaired.

No numbing or drilling required – the dentist will first perform a thorough cleaning with a special toothbrush to prepare the teeth. The sealant material is then placed on the tooth, before a special light is used to harden the sealants on the chewing surfaces. And that's it! Your child can eat and drink straight away after the procedure.

Helpfuls Ways to Encourage Your Child to Quit Thumb Sucking.

           Lose The Thumb

When it comes to quitting thumb sucking, it's important to remember that this is a very normal developmental behavior in young children. Some babies begin even before they are born! Non-nutritive sucking – both pacifiers and digits – are associated with their need for contact and security, and can help them self-soothe. However, oral habits may place pressure on the teeth and surrounding structures and can cause changes that persist after the habit stops.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children stop sucking habits by the age of 3. The longer a habit persists, the more likely it is to have long-term effects; however, before this age, changes are less likely to be permanent and make braces less likely. By age 3, many children are also developmentally ready to drop the habit.

If you're concerned that your child's thumb sucking habit is causing any teeth to shift or changes to their jaw, a visit to Grand River Pediatric Dentistry can allow Dr. Christy and Dr. Meghan to assess the situation and provide guidance on the best way to help your child.

In the meantime, here are a few tips to remember:

-Try to stay positive with your child
Healthy Drink Options

There’s no shortage of beverage options for kids these days, but it can be tough to know which ones are actually healthy. That’s why some of the nation’s leading experts on children’s health came together to develop recommendations for choosing the best drinks for kids.

Whether it is milk, juice, water, or other drinks, these new recommendations clear up the confusion and help parents and caregivers set their kids on the path for healthy growth and development.

0-6 months: Babies need only breast milk or infant formula.

6-12 months: In addition to breast milk or infant formula, offer a small amount of drinking water once solid foods are introduced. It’s best for children under 1 not to drink juice. Even 100% fruit juice offers no nutritional benefits over whole fruit.

12-24 months: It’s time to add whole milk, which has many essential nutrients, along with plain drinking water for hydration. A small amount of 100% fruit juice is ok.

2-5 years: Milk and water are the go-to beverages. Look for milk with less fat than whole milk, like skim (non-fat) or low-fat (1%).
At Grand River Pediatric Dentistry, we know that when your child’s mouth hurts, it can be frightening for your child and stressful for you. We also know that almost half of all children will hurt a tooth at some time. As pediatric dentists, Dr. Condit and Dr. Vollmar are here to help and have the compassion and expertise to handle all dental emergencies.

           Injuries to Baby Teeth

Kids fall quite often, especially as they become more mobile. Mouth injuries are somewhat common and bleeding is often associated. Lots of love and cold compresses (we love sugar-free popsicles!) can help. If the baby teeth are loose or chipped, or you are worried about your child, call our office.

           Injuries to Adult Teeth

The top front teeth are the most likely to be hurt. This can happen while playing sports or just while being a kid. If the tooth is chipped or loose, call our office right away.

If the entire tooth falls out, handle it very gently by the crown (the top) and try not to touch the root. You can rinse it carefully to remove any dirt or debris. The best place to put the tooth is back where it came from

It is important to brush and floss daily to prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems. Did you know there are extra ways to help keep your chompers healthy and strong?

For instance, fluoride toothpastes and mouth rinses are available over-the-counter. Also, eating a balanced diet and limiting sugary drinks and snacks can support good oral health.

When you can, drink a glass of water after meals. This can help wash away sugars from foods and drinks. Additionally, if you eat or drink something that is acidic, like soda or candy, wait 30 minutes before brushing. This will give your saliva time to neutralize the acids and protect your teeth.
